Introduction
Damon is a type of braces system known as self-ligating or tie-less. Self-ligating or tie-less means that the wires get held into the part of the braces glued onto the tooth (called brackets) without using any elastic or steel ties. The bracket has a little door like hinge on it that is closed after the wire is placed into the bracket.

In traditional braces an elastics tie is used to hold the wire in the brace. The disadvantage of elastics is pressing the wire against the brace creating a large amount of friction that has to be overcome to move the teeth. The Damon brace holds the wire passively allowing tooth movement at a fraction of the force levels required to move teeth. This is more commonly known as the “slide method” as a lower level of force is placed on the teeth.

As early as 1935, the idea of self-ligating brackets began to take shape. Over the years, many designs were patented, but few were commercially available until Ormco created the Edgelock system in 1972. As the 1980s and 1990s progressed, many companies created their own versions of self-ligating brackets and improved upon the idea by offering both passive and active resistance on the arch wire. Nowadays, we have a number of self-ligating choices, such as Orec's Speed Braces, Ormco's Damon System, GAC's In-Ovation.

In 1996, the initial version of the Damon Braces System was introduced. It was further developed into a secondary form in 2000. This version's introduction was complemented by the production of a number of guidelines that were written in regards to the Damon System.
Later, in 2004 and 2005, the demand for durable, strong ceramic braces were satisfied by the production of the Damon 3 hybrid as well as the Damon MX brackets.

Faster treatment
The Damon system allows for there to be a sturdy tube in which the arch wires can glide around and work within. With the initial wires in the Damon System, all of the activity is on the outside of the tube and not the base, which is completely counter to how traditional braces work. In traditional braces the arch wires are tied into the base of the bracket to control teeth. Working along the outside of the tubes with light forces allow crowding to unravel much quicker by uprighting and de-rotating teeth simultaneously. This is more mechanically efficient than traditional braces.

The presence of a solid door holding the wires allows for rubberbands (elastics) to be started earlier with less adverse movements. This absolutely speeds treatment.
There is less friction when moving the teeth so teeth can move quicker and be fixed in a shorter amount of time. Results have also been demonstrated as quicker with treatment thought to last around six months less than ordinary braces.

 

Third-party studies including one study by Tagawa prove that treatment time using the Damon System is up to seven months faster than other orthodontic appliances. That’s because the Damon System exhibits 99.5% less friction than active self-ligating brackets and 99.8% less friction than conventionally ligated twins according to a study by Vourdouris. Berger reports that such a dramatic reduction in friction has been linked to shortening overall treatment time.

This is a relatively new approach to tooth alignment that allows the teeth to be straightened, usually without extractions and often without having to use rapid palatal expanders. In years past, orthodontic treatment often meant having to have permanent teeth removed to make room. Fortunately, this is no longer the case. Damon braces allow us to align the teeth with far fewer extractions, and in a shorter time period than traditional braces.

A growing body of literature is further demonstrating that the Damon System achieves arch width expansion without the need for rapid palatal expanders. A comparative study by Mikulencak found that the Damon System achieved clinically and statistically significant changes in arch width dimensions in the molar and premolar areas after treatment. In comparing the results achieved with the Damon System to previously published results of RPE cases, the study concludes that there was no observed difference in molar tipping associated with the increase in arch width, demonstrating that the same results may be achieved with the far less invasive Damon System.

As the Damon braces are self-ligating they do not require rubber or steel ties, which are often the cause of orthodontic discomfort and irritation. Not only this, but it means that the braces do not need to be adjusted and tightened as often as traditional braces, which can be a very time-consuming procedure. Besides, Self-ligation reduces the risks of percutaneous injury, protecting the patient from soft-tissue lacerations and possible infections from the cut ends of steel ligatures.
In addition to these advantageous features is the comfort aspect. This is achieved by the edges of the brace being rather shapely and well fitting. The addition of 'stops' on the wires helps prevent the wire from becoming displaced from its intended location. They also are nicer looking than traditional braces which will have your 14 year old pushing for the new approach.

In passive self-ligating braces, orthodontic treatment begins with very light wires .014 inch in size that are made of an alloy of copper, nickel, and titanium (CuNiTi) and have a non-anatomical shape because it is wider than natural arch. Successively larger wires are placed as the arches round out and as the teeth level. The next-larger wire is used when it may be passively placed in the brackets. It does not become easily stained. Furthermore it has been known to attract a significantly reduced amount of plaque in comparison to other systems making it a more hygienic choice. Whereas, traditional braces can be associated with plaque build up due to the ties that hold them in place. This can inhibit cleaning and oral hygiene is subsequently affected.

Damon braces are the most expensive treatment available on the market. Having your teeth adjusted using the Damon braces system is notably pricier than other, more traditional orthodontic methods.  Despite this cost, the benefits may be worth the extra money.

No color for kids

To make braces more acceptable and fun for young people, manufacturers have made brightly colored elastics. These are the tiny rubber bands that hold the wires to the braces. Children can choose elastics with their school colors or a holiday color scheme, such as orange and black for Halloween. Choosing the color of the elastics allows patients "to feel that they are more involved in their treatment," Dr. Cangialosi says.

Summary
As more orthodontic practices embrace the concept of self-ligation, it is becoming apparent that stainless steel and elastomeric ligatures will eventually be as outdated as full banding is today. When the Damon System started, there wasn't much competition with self-ligating braces. Today, several self-ligating systems are produced by all of the larger companies and several smaller ones, too. What Damon does exceptionally well is teach, train and follow-up with their doctors and their techniques to perfect their self-ligating system and wires for the optimal results.

However, it should be stressed that, the success of the Damon System is totally dependent on the orthodontist implicating it. A good orthodontist is a fundamental factor in the triumph of the Damon System as it requires commitment and perseverance. By only applying Damon braces and continuing with conventional methods on the side, the benefits observed would be extremely limited. Damon Brackets are just one tool.
